Rainwater Harvesting + April Showers = Full water tank
April showers are a frequent blessing if you are in a position to store the rainwater for use when the dryer summer months often bring hosepipe bans and water restricts.
The benefits are simple and obvious but I still can’t understand why so many UK houses (with gardens and roofs) are not taking advantage of the water that lands on our roofs. Why throw away this valuable resource when we pay for water by the litre and pay a sewage charge bases on the number of litres of water supplied.
Rainwater harvesting starts with a simple water butt under a down pipe, ideal for filling water cans, and gets slightly more sophisticated as the rainwater replaces expensive tap water for more uses.
It’s relatively simple to have an above ground water tank and an automatic pressure regulated booster pump to use rainwater with a mains pressure outside tap. You can then use your rainwater with a standard garden hose to water the garden, wash the car, hose off the dog etc, rainwater contains less chlorine and lime than tap water so you need less soap, get less water makes on windows or car and plants prefer it to expensive tap water.
Using any of our above ground water tanks or underground water tanks and one of our pressure regulated booster pumps it is simple to create a mains pressure rainwater tap.
It is possible to go even further with your use of rainwater and supply toilets and washing machines via an automatic mains water make up pump. These systems are available in kit form for above and below ground use or as an off the shelf system such as Balmoral garden harvest and home harvest systems.
We all know about saving for a rainy day, how about saving ON and rainy day?
